Director, BRHS Band Middle School Winners for All South Jersey BandAfter auditions on Saturday, two of our middle school musicians have met the standard to play in the All South Jersey Jr. High Band. The band is comprised of a very select group of music students who are selected after auditioning with a prepared piece and various other requirements. These music students competed against hundreds of others for a select few positions in the band. Joshua Olive made the band on trumpet making the 8th chair and Lonnie Souder made the band on trombone capturing the 2nd chair. I would like to express my personal joy and pride in the accomplishment of these students. They will be practicing with the band for the next month and then will present a concert to be held at Rowan University on March 6, 2011 at 3:00 pm.

The following students have recently tested out of the ESL program because their English skills have now grown so much. It took a lot of work and effort on the part of these students and their teachers to get to this point. Congratulations are in order for these students. ESL Our ESL teachers from Kindergardent through high school met with Dr. Beth Wasell to review and comment on the new curriculum. They talked about teaching writing and how to meet the needs of students at many different levels in the same class room.
The last time we talked to Beth she was 9 months pregnant and moving kind of slowly. Yesterday she was still glowing about the new baby but obviously happy to be back in the field sharing her expertise with her colleagues once again. Thanks to Beth and all the ESL teachers for such an exiting meeting of the minds. Curriculum Development for World LanguagesGreat strides were made in curriculum development during the inservice workshops on Friday October the 8th. We made a lot of progress on our unit plans for Spanish and French Level one. Our main concern was to zero in on the most important concepts in each lesson. We did this by identifying the essential questions and enduring understandings for each unit.
We were all glad to have the opportunity to meet our newest teacher Leslie Gonzalez. We were also all happy to congratulate Hilda Pesantes on her baby girl who is soon to arrive! Music and Art Marathon Session It was a pleasure to meet with my two new departments as a group yesterday. I had met them all personally and even begun the walkthroughs but this was the first time we were all together in the same room. They are a very talented group of people.
We discussed our programs from k-12. We reviewed the latest core content standards and determined that they are being met in the vast majority of cases. There are some issues at the elementary level as we are very short on teachers, materials and class time. In spite of all this the teachers do so much with the limited resources available to them. |
